TIPS
FOR EARLY-SEASON PHEASANT HUNTING
At the beginning of the season, you can find pheasants
most anywhere; in grass fields, cattail sloughs, corn
fields, road ditches and brushy draws. Public pheasant
hunting areas, though crowed, can produce a lot of
pheasants. Here is a list of some early-season tips:
- Wait
until the initial opening day barrage of pheasant
hunters is over, and then go into these areas
that have already been hunted. Ring neck pheasants
move through-out the day, as the pressure from
other
pheasant hunters move them from field to field.
- Look
for dense or very hard to access areas, these areas
tend to discourage all pheasant hunters other
than the die hard hunters.
- For
the close range shots in early-season, many hunters
prefer improved or modified choke shotguns,
with a shot size of 5-6 shot.
