TIPS FOR LATE-SEASON PHEASANT HUNTING

Most veteran pheasant hunters rather hunt during the late season, than struggle with the large crowds during the early-season. Although the pheasants “wise-up” in a quick hurry, you can still have great success in late season if you use these tips:

  • Look for wetlands or other very dense pheasant producing cover. Later in the season, the ring neck pheasant seeks heavier cover in which to hide.
  • Try to locate areas off the beaten path, like small groups of tress and brush in the middle of sections. Most pheasant hunters by-pass these areas mainly because it takes to much effort to walk to them. These areas can be loaded with pheasants from time to time.
  • Check the dirt road ditches with dense cover, and listen. I have harvested many wild ring neck pheasants by the sound of them running through the ditch as a vehicle passes. Pheasants go to these ditches in morning and evening times to seek out small gravel pieces to grind food in their digestive gizzard.
  • Work grassy sloughs, ditches or other brushy areas and cover, adjacent to newly harvested crop areas. If you watch as the cornfield is being picked, for example, you may notice pheasants flying into these areas.
  • Always make certain to keep all noises to a minimum. Pheasants rely heavily on their hearing to detect danger and will often flush wildly hundreds of yards ahead at the first sign of any noise such as a vehicle door, or you yelling at your hunting dog. Remember, as the season progresses, the ring neck pheasant gets jumpier.
  • During late-season pheasant hunting, try using a modified to full choke and a larger shot size such as 4 or 5 shot.
