PHEASANT
HUNTING BASICS
Pheasant hunting requires some advance preparation.
First, you’ll need to do a little preseason scouting; it
will pay big dividends later in the season. Most state
game and fish departments make annual pheasant counts in
late summer and publicize that information and results
before the season is scheduled to open. We recommend
studying this information; then you can do a little
research on your own. Drive around in the early morning
or late afternoon on gravel roads, watching for
pheasant’s on the roadsides. When you find a promising
area, talk to the area landowners and ask for permission
to hunt when the season begins.
A properly fitted hunter is a smart hunter.
General-purpose pheasant hunting apparel consists of a
hunting jacket with a large game pouch, brush pants and
a blaze-orange cap, which makes it easy for your friends
or family to see you at all times in dense or tall
cover. Comfortable hunting boots that provide good ankle
and leg support are a must for long-distance walking.
Teach yourself to take your time on each shot. When a
big rooster pheasant bursts from cover with a loud
cackle, even many veteran hunters lose their composure.
If you make the mistake of rushing your shot, the bird
will fly away untouched. If you do manage to hit the
bird at a very close range, there won’t be much left to
take in to the house at the end of the day.
Statistics show that more than 3 times as many pheasants
are taking the first half of the season, as in the last.
The uneducated, young pheasants are harvested first.
Hunting pressure is normally heaviest on opening weekend
and gradually taper’s off through the season.
Once young pheasants become educated, the pheasant
hunting becomes tougher, but the competition for
pheasant hunting spots decreases greatly also. For this
reason, many experienced pheasant hunters prefer late
season pheasant hunting.
As the pheasants behavior changes greatly over the
course of a season, your pheasant hunting success will
improve greatly if you learn to tailor your pheasant
hunting tactics accordingly.
