SOUTH DAKOTA PHEASANT HUNTING LAWS FOR TRANSPORTING PHEASANTS

No upland game bird may be possessed, placed in public storage, transported, etc. unless the following laws are adhered to first.

Pheasants must have one of the following attached to the body cavity. A fully feathered wing, the entire head, or the entire leg showing the developed rooster pheasant spur.

When South Dakota pheasant hunting, the law states that no more than two pheasants can be placed in one container together. This allows the conservation officer the ability to check each package, and determine its contents without obstructions. Generally, it is easier to leave a leg on each pheasant, and adjust the two roosters accordingly, so they fit snuggly into a one gallon, locking plastic freezer bag.

All South Dakota pheasant hunting enthusiasts must obtain a permit to ship their pheasants through a mail service such as UPS. Following these simple steps, will help to speed the process along.

First, contact a conservation officer to schedule a meeting time and place to obtain a permit. All persons involved must meet with the officer and bring their hunting licenses and game to be shipped. Permits will not be issued before they are needed. Many conservation officers are extremely busy during the South Dakota pheasant hunting season, therefore it is recommended that each hunter arrange to carry or transport only his or her own game birds as personal baggage.
