PHEASANT HUNTING IN STRIP COVER
This type of cover is ideal for a lone hunter, or larger
groups alike. Although, probably not recommended for the
hunter that does not have a dog. The narrow width
improves your odds of flushing any pheasants that are
present.
Close working dogs are a must. The pheasants are not
likely to evade a good dog in a narrow strip, so their
only escape tactic is to either run ahead or flush. If
the dog pushes them too hard, they will flush wildly
hundreds of yards ahead of you, making a clean harvest
impossible.
These locations can be tremendous areas for cornering
the wily ring neck pheasant. It does require some
planning; however it pays big dividends at the end.
Try to take your time, sometimes doubling back or making
large sweeps through these areas. Smart, old roosters
figure it is sometimes safer to sit tight, and allow
your pheasant hunting group to walk right by them.
Always work these areas with a dog, into the wind. Then
stop, listen, and allow your hunting dog ample time to
work the area thoroughly, before proceeding forward.
Once your pheasant hunting group has reached the last
quarter of the area, slow everyone down, including the
dog, and push out the remaining pheasants that are
holding tight. Remembering that safety should be kept in
mind at all times, and never attempt to take a shot in
the direction of the blockers that are positioned in
front of you.
