RING
NECK PHEASANT HABITAT
Cattail marshes provide some of the best habitat for
pheasant hunting, and for wintering habitat for the
pheasant. Most marshes can be hunted thoroughly with the
use of a good hunting dog, and several close friends
with great success.
Wetland fringes are often a good source for the ring
neck pheasant to get out of the elements and seek
shelter. These areas also provide a watering source in
hot, dry conditions. You will generally find cattail
grass here as well.
Brushy fence lines that are overwhelmed with bushes or
trees make prime year-around pheasant hunting and cover.
Grassy terraces intended to reduce erosion of crop land
make great loading or resting areas, locate terraces
close to a food source for prime hunting.
Retired crop fields that have been left to weed patches
or not plowed can be utilized for outstanding nesting
and roosting habitat. Unlike hay fields, they will not
be mown during the nesting season. These areas are
commonly known as CRP areas.
Abandoned farmsteads offer good escape cover and
wintering cover. Groves and buildings break the wind,
and grasses and brush that develop in open areas furnish
ground cover to protect the birds from predators.
