SOUTH
DAKOTA PHEASANT HUNTING AND THE EFFECTS ON THE
FARMER
South Dakota pheasant hunting has affected the local
farmers and ranchers greatly over the years. The farmers
have been left to supplement their farming incomes using
other means besides just farming. With annual farming
incomes steadily declining, many farmers have taken to
charging a fee for access to hunting their properties.
However, if a hunter wishes to pay for the hunting
rights on the land, he may make a new friend in the
process. The South Dakota pheasant hunting industry has
certainly expanded through-out the years and it seems as
though the local farmers are economically forced to
change also. The days of knocking on a door and
obtaining permission to hunt are gone. The land is
either sold to hunting organizations, or leased for
several years to other pheasant hunters.
