SOUTH DAKOTA PHEASANT HUNTING-ITS SUCCESSFUL

South Dakota pheasant hunting is as good as it gets really for three essential elements. There really is not a lot to explain about these three elements, they are: habitat and more habitats!

First you need habitat for breeding; this is a resource that cannot be overlooked. The breeding areas are critical to wild pheasant’s survival, as well as breeding new broods each spring. These areas may be CRP areas, grass areas, bushy fence lines, and believe it or not, many chicks are born each spring in the roadside ditches.

You also need habitat that is dense enough for the pheasants to avoid predators. Most thick, overgrown areas that are common are: CRP areas, sloughs and ravines, overgrown tree belts and thicket areas. These areas provide the pheasants an escape route they need on a daily basis to avoid being killed by hawks, raccoons, or coyotes.

Winter survival is also very critical to the South Dakota pheasants. Harsh, cold, long winters are common in SD, and play a large role in the outcome of the wild pheasant population here. Any cover at all is commonly used by the pheasants here, and you can also see these birds frequenting farmer’s yards in search of a daily food source when food is scarce. Federal programs have been established to provide a certain percentage of re-imbursement to the landowner, if he is willing to put forth the effort and time to establish good winter habitat for these pheasants.

The last major factor in determining pheasant’s survival is the weather. Weather conditions through-out the year, winter and summer alike can and does play a vital role in the birds overall populations. A very dry, drought-like summer can mean that the pheasants will not get enough moisture on a daily basis, and also hurt the small insect production that the chicks need for daily nutritional content. These conditions leave the pheasants not only with-out moisture, they also do not get the food sources the insects provide during crop development. Crops are not fully developed, therefore, insects and old grains must substitute their daily food source during this time of the year.

Wintering habitat that consists of small acres of food plots, good cover from the elements, is very important to these wild pheasants. During the long, winters here in South Dakota, these pheasants need a tremendous amount of feed to keep their body temperatures up, and healthy.
